About the author

Donnette Martelle

A mother, a counselor, and a writer who has walked the road she describes.

Donnette Martelle is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a Mental Health Counselor with an M.A. in Counseling Psychology (GHMS). She writes with compassion, honesty, and hope, drawing on both lived experience and professional insight.

She has walked through love, loss, motherhood, family, and the death of her son Jeremy (1973–2019). Spell Out Grief grew out of that walk: years of sitting with her own grief, and years of sitting with other people in theirs.

Her writing holds two things at once — the professional understanding of how grief moves through the heart, the body, the mind, and the generations that follow, and the plain human knowledge of what it is to miss someone every day.

In her own words

“I did not write this book because grief is easy to explain. I wrote it because grief is something many people carry quietly.”
